EU funding granted to the Port of HaminaKotka Ltd for the onshore power investment in the Mussalo port area

The FuelEU Maritime Regulation, aimed at reducing emissions in maritime transport, sets specific requirements for container and passenger vessels calling at EU ports, obligating them to use onshore power systems to meet their energy needs while berthed. From 2030 onwards, container and passenger vessels over 5,000 gross tonnage will be required to use onshore power or other equivalent zero-emission technologies when calling at EU ports, unless applicable exemptions apply.

Port of HaminaKotka Ltd applied for EU funding for the onshore power investment in the Mussalo port through the CEF Transport Alternative Fuels Infrastructure Facility (AFIF) programme, which aims to support the deployment of alternative fuel distribution infrastructure and promote the reduction of transport-related CO₂ emissions along the TEN-T network. The company was granted approximately EUR 3 million to construct an onshore power supply system for container vessels.
